Rio Basic Facts

Rio is one of the main economic, cultural and financial centres in Brazil, and is internationally acknowledged for it landscape and cultural icons such as the Sugarloaf Hill (Pão de Açúcar), the Statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) (declared one of the Seven Modern World Wonders), the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema e Barra da Tijuca neighbourhoods, the Maracanã Stadium, the Tijuca Forest, the Paquetá Island, the New Years´ Eve Celebration in Copacabana and, of course, the Carnival.

Rio has the second GDP of Brazil (and the 30st worldwide), esteemed in nearly R$ 128 billion. The headquarters of two of the major Brazilian Corporations are located in the City (oil company Petrobras and telephone company Vale), along with the largest media and communications company in America Latina, Globo. It is the second research and development pole in Brazil, responsible for 17% of the national scientific production.

It is also known as the "Marvellous City" (Cidade Maravilhosa) and Rio locals are called "carioca".
