About Jardim

Jardim Botânico (The Botanical Garden) is a one of Rio´s most famous districts.

It is located in the South Zone of Rio. It has a population of 20,000 and borders Lagoa, Gávea, Humaitá and Alto da Boa Vista. The district is linked to the North Zone through the Rebouças tunnel.

The population of the neighbourhood is mainly middle and high class. Its main street is Rua Jardim Botânico, which goes through the entire neighbourhood.

Jardim Botanico´s architecture is quite varied. Some of its oldest buildings are still standing amidst modern constructions. Since the neighbourhood is quite modern in relation to the history of the city. On the slopes of the mountains there are some beautiful houses of traditional Carioca families.

This is a heavily vegetated area because it has the Lage Park, the historic Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, that which the district owes its name and a part of the Tijuca Forest. All these give the district a unique lushness for a major city.

The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is a scientific institution created by Emperor D. João VI when he came to Brazil. Besides the district also has the Lage Park, a 52.2 hectares area formerly property of the Lage family.

The lush vegetation and the proximity to the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon make this a cooler neighbourhood than the average of Rio de Janeiro.
