Paraty, the colonial jewel of Rio de Janeiro

There are many Places Around Rio de Janeiro that a tourists can visit. Some of these places are only a few hours away from Rio. For those who enjoy historical towns there are cities dating from the Colonial times that have preserved their historical heritage such as Paraty and fine examples of the Imperial period (during the XIXth century) like the Emperor retreat in Petropolis. Other tourist towns in the State of Rio de Janeiro besides Rio city that you should definitively check are Petrópolis, in the hilly inland; Angra dos Reis and Paraty, at the lush "Costa Verde" (Green Coast). For those who love nature, Rio de Janeiro state boasts National Parks and a lush hilly landscape a few kilometres from the coastline. There you will be able to go on trekking excursions, practice rappel and hiking, discover hidden waterfalls and dive in fresh water natural swimming pools. If you like to lie down and relax in the beach, the beautiful Green Coast ("Costa Verde") also has some gorgeous beach resorts to rest from the urban pace of Rio de Janeiro city. The state´s most populous cities are Rio de Janeiro, Nova Iguaçu, Niterói, Duque de Caxias, São Gonçalo, São João de Meriti, Campos dos Goytacazes, Petrópolis and Volta Redonda.

Rio de Janeiro is made up of two distinct parallel areas, stretching inland from the shoreline towards Minas Gerais: a plain, known as baixada, and a plateau. Rio de Janeiro State´s varied geography features nature paradises along the coast as well as in the mountains. It is located in the Southeast of Brazil and has a total area of 43,635 square kilometres.



On the coast

Serra da Bocaina National Park

The beach towns usually receive most visitors on weekends and in the summertime, between December and March. These include Parati, Angra dos Reis, Araruama, Niterói, Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo, Búzios, Rio das Ostras and Macaé. There you will find beautiful beaches and good waves. There are also some incredible festivals and popular celebrations such as the Festival da Pinga (Sugar Cane Liquour Festival) on August 19th to 22th, both in Paraty.

Inland Rio

Inland Rio you will find small farms as you enter the Serra do Mar. This area´s most sought after destinations include Petrópolis, Nova Friburgo and Teresópolis.
