For the openminded looking for the real thing there are also rodas do samba on weekends and holidays.

If you love "Girl from Ipanema" you must definitively visit Ipanema beach and then go to Toca do Vinícius, a small bossa-nova shop in the same district that sometimes features free shows. Ipanema Beach also becomes the stage for city hall promoted events. Beach shows are free!

Barra hosts the largest concert hall and features international artists and groups. Sometimes, there may be major music events at the Sambodrome or the Maracanã Stadium.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a more underground and the music shows locals choose, you should check

Lapa: samba, funk, hip-hop and DJs. Go to the clubs around Rua Mem de Sá Street. You will find a very friendly atmosphere and chance to meet with Cariocas.

If you are looking for ballet and classical music, you ought to go to the the Municipal Theatre. Sala Cecilia Meirelles features chamber music.

For most traditional samba show for tourists go to Plataforma in Leblon.
