Origins of Brazilian Rock

Brazilian Rock band Titas

Brazilian pop has it undisputed king, Roberto Carlos, head of the Jovem Guarda (Young Guard) in the 60s and 70s.
In the 70s, the referent for rock in Brazil was Raul Seixas, an anarchist Baian musician.

During the 1980s, a new generation of rockers influenced by punk, post-punk and new wave, threw themselves against the then dominant MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). This initial antagonism turned to mixture when MPB musicians (such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Ney Matogrosso) recorded songs composed by new bands, and these experimented with Rock, Forró, Samba, Reggae and Bossa nova fusions.
Brazilian rock developed mainly in Sao Paulo and other cities, like Brasilia, Recife and Minas Gerais, but Rio has some famous bands such as O Rappa and Planet Hemp and the Rock in Rio festivals held in Rio de Janeiro.
