Main sights on a Rio City tour

A basic Rio Tour should include: the Beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana and Leblon, The Christ statue, Lapa district, some of Niemeyer´s Architecture works, the Maracanã Stadium, a Samba show and the Sugarloaf cable car.

The statue of Christ the Redeemer

One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World from the top of Corcovado Hill (710 metres) Christ the Redeemer blesses Rio de Janeiro. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is a very important symbol of Brazil´s Christianity. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and it opened to the public in 1931, after 9 years of construction. In October 2006, on the statue´s 75th anniversary, a chapel was consecrated under the statue, allowing Catholics to hold baptisms and weddings there. There is a nice 20 minute train ride that goes through the jungle to arrive to the statue. This is a visitors´ must. The view is stunning. On 2008, 510.196 tourists visited the Christ the Redeemer.

Copacabana Beach

Nicknamed the "Little Princess of the Sea" by the Cariocas, Copacabana is located in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. One of the world´s most famous beaches, it has a bike-only lane, food kiosks, hotels, bars, restaurants, and is crowded day and night. The sidewalk of Atlântica Avenue, made of Portuguese black and white stones imitating the sea waves, is one of its most distinctive features. Copacabana also hosts the largest New Year´s Eve celebration on Earth, which gathers 3 million people.

Ipanema Beach

The history of Bossa Nova is marked by the sands of Ipanema. This beach is one of Cariocas favourites due to its

charm and chilled spirit. Ipanema was made famous by the song "Garota de Ipanema" composed by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. The 2 kilometres of beach usually exhibit Rio´s most beautiful bodies (and Cariocas do take figure very seriously!).

A meeting point for locals, artists and tourists, you can practice sports such as beach soccer and beach volley.

There are also shows in the evening.

Dois Irmãos Lookout

Although it is not very frequented by locals, the Penhasco Dois Irmãos Park (Two Brothers Peak), in Alto Leblon, is a perfect spot to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in Rio, and that means a lot. There used to be only rough paths to access but now it has illumination, security and a car access, and is becoming an interesting option for tourists.

The stadium also offers a guided tourist visit, where you can walk the tunnel leading to the pitch, which is decorated with pictures and verses that the fans sing on the games, and visit the changing rooms.

Pink Fleet
