Some facts of beach volley

Beach volleyball, or sand volleyball, is now an Olympic team sport. Like other variations of volleyball, the game is abot two teams, separated by a high net, trying to score points against the others. A score is obtained when a ball is grounded on the opposite court.

Professional beach volleyball teams usually consist of two players. However, the recreational variation can contain up to six players.

Although beach volley was popularized in California, its first recorded games were in Hawaii, at the Outrigger Canoe Club. It arose when bored surfers needed something to do while the surf was down. Nowadays, beach volley is played worldwide, even in countries without traditional beaches, like Switzerland!

It is said that the modern two-man beach volleyball game was devised by Paul "Pablo" Johnson in the summer of 1930, while waiting for players to show up for a six-man game and that changed the game forever.

Beach volley vs. Indoor volleyball

The basic differences between beach volley and indoor volleyball are:

  • Two players per team, instead of six
  • Sand, instead of a hard floor, as surface
  • There are no substitutions.
  • Players play the game barefoot.
  • The ball is softer and slightly bigger than an indoor ball.
  • Beach volleyball players use hand signals to indicate the type of block they intend to make, also known as block signals.
