Rio de Janeiro Travel Information, Hotels, Booking Services

Rio is a major architecture destination: from the Portuguese colony times to international modern architecture genius Niemeyer, each district holds buildings waiting to be discovered: churches, public buildings, private houses, the Sambodromo and the legendary Maracana Stadium.

Downtown, the "Centro", has monuments and public buildings that date back to the times when Rio was the capital of the Colony, the Empire and the Republic of Brazil. These are some of Brazil´s finest cultural inheritances.

Rio´s golden age left a legacy of major works of art and public buildings, such as the former Bank of Brazil, nowadays a cultural centre, the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro, the National Museum of Fine Art, Itamaraty Palace, once seat of the national government as and the Foreign Office, the National Museum at Quinta da Boa Vista (former imperial residence), the National History Museum and the National Library.

There are also monuments and beautiful examples of religious architecture, such as the Candelária and the São Bento Monastery and, of course, the Christ the Redeemer statue.
